Vincent Mangano

a.k.a. "The Executioner" as he was named in a Brooklyn newspaper, was the head of the Mangano crime family and also one of the infamous bosses of Murder, Incorporated from 1931 to 1951. His brother Philip Mangano was his right hand man and de facto, or substituto, underboss of the crime family which eventually became the Gambino crime family.

He is also a distant paternal relative of current Genovese crime family Underboss Venero Mangano and a suspected relative of Lawrence Mangano.

Giuseppe Bonanno

a.k.a. "Joe Bananas" , a Sicilian-born American Mafioso who became the boss of the Bonanno crime family. He was nicknamed "Joe Bananas," a name he despised because it made him sound crazy.

He is said to have been one of the models for the character "Vito Corleone" in Mario Puzo's novel The Godfather. Both Bonanno and Corleone wanted their sons to succeed them, and both allegedly wanted their crime families to stay out of the narcotics rackets (although many of soldiers and associates of Bonanno crime family were dealing in drugs, most known was later Boss of family Carmine Galante).

Charles Luciano

a.k.a. "Lucky", Was considered the father of modern organized crime and the mastermind of the massive postwar expansion of the international heroin trade. He is the first official boss of the modern Genovese crime family.

Time magazine named Luciano among the top 20 most influential builders and titans of the 20th century.

Salvatore Riina

a.k.a. "The Beast"(La Belva) due to his violent nature and "The Short One"(U curtu) due to his diminutive height, A member of the Sicilian Mafia who became the most powerful member of the criminal organisation in the early 1980s. Although apparently they never called him these nicknames to his face. During his life-long career in crime he is believed to have personally killed around forty people and to have ordered the deaths of several hundreds more.

During the 1980s and early 1990s, Riina and his Mafia faction, the Corleonesi, waged a ruthless campaign of violence against both rival mobsters and the state which culminated in the assassination of the anti-Mafia prosecutors Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino. This caused widespread public revulsion against the Mafia and led to a major crackdown by the authorities, resulting in the capture and imprisonment of Riina and many of his associates.

Bernardo Provenzano

a.k.a. "The Phantom of Corleone" and "The Accountant" due to his apparently subtle and low-key approach to running his crime empire, at least in contrast to some of his more violent predecessors.

Before his succession, he was more recognized as "Binnie the tractor" (Binnu u tratturi) because, in the words of one informant, 'he mows people down'.

A member of the Sicilian Mafia (Cosa Nostra) and is suspected of having been the head of the Corleonesi, a Mafia faction that originated in the village of Corleone, and de facto capo di tutti capi (boss of bosses) of the entire Sicilian Mafia until his arrest in 2006 after more than four decades on the run.

Salvatore Lo Piccolo

a.k.a. "Baron" (il Barone), "The Old One" (u vascu) and "Elder" (il vecchio), a Sicilian mafioso and one of the most powerful bosses of Palermo, Sicily. Lo Piccolo rose through the ranks of the Palermo mafia throughout the 1980s and he became the capo-mandamento of the San Lorenzo district in the early 1990s, replacing Salvatore Biondino who was sent to prison. Lo Piccolo was a fugitive since 1983 and had been running his Mafia affairs in hiding. With the capture of Bernardo Provenzano on April 11, 2006 Lo Piccolo had been cementing his power and rise to the top of the Palermo Mafia until his own arrest on November 5, 2007.

In clandestine correspondence with former mafia boss Bernardo Provenzano, Salvatore Lo Piccolo used to identify himself by the number 30. Lo Piccolo's fortune came from the international cocaine trafficking, the extortion of businesses, and the theft of money allocated for public works projects. He invested much of his earnings in real estate. Lo Piccolo long supported Provenzano's policy of not directing violence toward the state and preferred arbitration as means to settle conflict between rival mafia factions.

James Joseph Bulger, Jr.

a.k.a. "Whitey", A wanted fugitive and alleged leader of the Winter Hill Gang, an Irish-American crime family operating in the region of Boston, Massachusetts. He is the brother of William Michael Bulger (who rose to become President of the Massachusetts State Senate and President of the University of Massachusetts).

On August 19, 1999, Bulger became the 458th Ten Most Wanted fugitive listed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). He is currently wanted for racketeering (under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO), murder, conspiracy to commit murder, extortion, conspiracy to commit extortion, money laundering, conspiracy to commit money laundering and narcotics distribution. In October 2007, Interpol released a "red notice" for Bulger.

John Joseph Gotti, Jr.

A.K.A. "The Dapper Don" and "The Teflon Don" after the murder of his former boss Paul Castellano, was the boss of the well known Gambino crime family, one of the Five Families in New York City.

He became widely known for his outspoken personality and flamboyant style that eventually caused his downfall. In 1992, Gotti was convicted of racketeering, 13 murders, obstruction of justice, hijacking, conspiracy to commit murder, illegal gambling, extortion, tax evasion, loansharking and other crimes and was sentenced to life in prison where he died 10 years later.

Alphonse Gabriel "Al" Capone

A.K.A. Scarface, was an Italian-American gangster who led a crime syndicate dedicated to smuggling and bootlegging of liquor and other illegal activities during the Prohibition Era of the 1920s and 1930s.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, to Southwestern Italian imigrants Gabriele and Teresina Capone, Capone began his career in Brooklyn before moving to Chicago and becoming the boss of the criminal organization known as the Chicago Outfit (although his business card reportedly described him as a used furniture dealer).

By the end of the 1920s, Capone had gained the attention of the Federal Bureau of Investigation following his being placed on the Chicago Crime Commission's "public enemies" list. Although never successfully convicted of racketeering charges, Capone's criminal career ended in 1931, when he was indicted and convicted by the federal government for income-tax evasion.
